Three Unmissable Architectural Gems in Kiev by Ramon van Meer
Over 1500 years old, Kiev is actually one of several most historic European cities. Still, the Ukrainian capital stays an undiscovered gem of European sightseeing, with its dazzling array of historic Slavic cathedrals and palaces and sweeping green lawns.
A few limited days are not practically good enough to visit the wonderful attractions and cultural sites which Kiev has to offer, however in case your travels dictate a strict period budget, listed here are 3 of the most gorgeous structures that you simply should not miss visiting in Kiev.
Pecherska Lavra
This particular expansive complex of underground churches, generally known as the Monastery of Caves, is over 900 years old, set up in the 11th century. A historic Eastern Orthodox Monastery, this maze of tunnels and caves is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The golden domes of St. Sophia Cathedral, which keeps watch over the underground complex, are an instantly incomparable feature of the Kiev skyline. Many much loved saints rest in the underground tunnels and catacombs of the Lower Lavra, while in the Upper Lavra you will find numerous state-owned galleries, which includes a strange and great collection of miniatures.
When preparing your trip to Percheska Lavra, make sure to wear appropriate clothing, including covered hair and dresses for women.
The Horodetsky Building
Located along restful Bakanova Street close to downtown Kiev, the Horodetsky Building is also known as the House with Chimeras, for this is featured with peculiar and eerie grotesques (also known as chimeras) in the form of fairy maidens, mythical animals, frogs, lizards, snakes and other unsavory creatures. Designed by Vladislav Gorodezhkii, a Kiev architect, as his private dwelling, many downtown stories encompass the house and its origins, probably the most disturbing of them being that Gorodezhkii ornamented the house with the creatures he believed kept watching over his late girl.
The House with Chimeras is situated straight across from the Ukrainian Presidential Building at 10 Bakanova Street.
Mariyinsky Palace
Just across from the Horodetsky Building is Kiev’s most outstanding architectural gem, Mariyinsky Palace, the ceremonial place of the Leader of Ukraine. Created in a gorgeous Baroque style which harkens to the wonderful Imperial buildings of Vienna, Mariyinksy Palace is decorated in significant blue and cream shades and looks out onto an open tiled mall at its front gate. The palace was done in 1752 and was the main dwelling for the Governers-General during the eighteenth and 19th centuries. It’s now used mainly for state receptions.
Mariyinsky Palace is found within Kiev’s lush Central Park, so make sure you invest an hour or so meandering throughout the park, which is home to Lover’s Bridge and supplies a few awesome sights of the Dnipro River from its balconies.
